Nuclear Disarmament
Bush Tries To Reduce US Nukes. Proceeding with the principle that ended the Cold War, and hopefully will reduce the risk of Nuclear War in the future, the President is proposing to downsize US nukes and consolidate facilities, to an estimated 1500 warheads, down from about 6000 during the cold war.
Predictably, the Democrats are doing everything they can to frustrate this kind of fruitful foreign policy by Republicans. While Bush is trying to reduce our arsenal and upgrade the safety and quality of the remaining deterent, the Democrats are refusing the funds to modernize and deactivate at the same time, throwing a monkey wrench into the national defense. It’s like they don’t live here. They trot out the same old dog in the manger tactics to block all progress and positive change. They say, “To couple modernization with reduction, sends the wrong message to our enemies.” Like what message would that be?
