Panathenaia Festival

This is the way the whole Parthenon was painted, inside and out. It totally enhanced the magnificent Greek art and brought the whole civilization alive. This is the way it ought to be seen. It is fine for scholars to muse over the broken rocks and battered statues, let them do what they want, but when it comes to presenting this art to the public and our children, it should be in a restored form that gives it its only true mean and expresses its only true beauty.

This Roman tiled floor of about 300 AD shows the tasteful use of color that all intact surviving artifacts show. Therefore, there is no reason to believe that the ancients did not color buildings and statuary to suit themselves.
Naturally this would vary as to taste and time, and was more pronounced in the original Greek than in the derivative Roman.
What should be aimed for is a balanced view of antiquity that would primarily focus on works, statuary, and buildings as they appeared then to the best of our knowledge.
The slavish worship by purist academics of blanched white marble, broken statues and ruined buildings is not a true representation of our cultural past. It is reductive at best and hateful, and spiteful, at worst.
